At the roadside

Beside the level crossing of the Ruta Nacional No.40, ex-No.293, and the railway Une joining Río Gallegos with the coal mine at Río Turbio, we find an oíd grave (much earlier than the road and the railway) whose tombstone declares it to be that of one José Arias, who had died on 24 May 1892 at the age of 74.
According to don Jorge Shaw and don Guillermo J. Clark (the latter a great-grand-nephew of Arias), the deceased was a baquiano1 from Chile who had worked in that capacity on the estancia Ostern-Aike, which originally belonged to don William Clark.
That estancia was later subdivided, passed into the hands of the Chilean firm 'Dick y Morrison' and finally to Tomás Joaquín Sancho San Miguel, changing its ñame to Palermo Aike.
José Arias also worked as the baquiano for the pioneer explorer 'Perito'2 Francisco Moreno for the Border Commission, Before Arias died he expressed a wish to be buried at that place, known to him as "Clark's rise" because it was the spot (19 kilometres from Güer Aike) from where he could make out the whole of the Gallegos river valley.
Arias ended up being related, by his four sisters' marriages, to well-known characters of these parts. Thus it was that Rosario Arias married William Clark (Luís Piedra Buena's deputy3 on the island Pavón4), and the others married respectively: Gregorio Ibáñez, after whom the crossing over the river Santa Cruz was named; Pedro Urbina, one of the first pioneers to settle in Río Gallegos; and Juan Pablo Ríquez, who was the first of a large family bearing his súmame that became influential in these parts.
Back in those years when Río Gallegos scarcely existed, William Clark would make the journey between Isla Pavón (where he lived) and Punta Arenas5, the obligatory provisioning centre for the whole of southern Patagonia, travelling along the Gallegos river valley, possibly as far as the 'Paso del Medio' (after which Noya's6 estancia was named).
1 "pathfinder", a typical gaucho who knows the lie of the land like the back of his hand, essential in the uncharted wilderness of Patagonia in the early pioneer times.
2 this is not a ñame but a title, meaning "expert".
3 Piedra Buena was in fact a Naval Commander, and the word used in Spanish here for "deputy" can also be interpreted as "lieutenant", although the sense here is intended to indicate "in lieu of the land owner".
4 on the river Santa Cruz, just outside the town named after Luís Piedra Buena.
5 in the far south of Chile, on the Strait of Magellan, the main port serving the "uttermost end of the world".
6 don Ibón Noya, another pioneer settler, who has a street named after him in Río Gallegos.

Of an iüustrious súmame, bom in San Pedro (Buenos Aires province), he was a prominent political figure who held key posts during Yrigoyen's first term of office as president. His political career is detailed by Horacio Lafuente in his book 'La Chocolatería'.
Right: José Antonio Aidar (1902-1965). Born in Buenos Aires, son of Lebanese parents (father José Antonio and mother Bahía Aidar), his family originaüy settled in Trelew. He, together with an únele and a brother, played a leading role in a bloody deed in defence of family honour.
He ended up being prosecuted and detained in Ushuaia, his defending counsel being José María Borrero (legal advisor to the workers during the rural strikes of 1920-1921). In payment for this defence he subsequently worked as secretary for the writing of Borrero's book 'La Patagonia Trágica''.
Finally settled in San Julián and working as a journalist, he started up the newspaper 'La Verdad', as a tribute to the one of that ñame founded by Borrero in Río Gallegos.
After the overthrow of Yrigoyeh, on 6 September 1930, and José E. Uriburu's rise to power, there was a coup d'état (the first in Argentina's history) resulting in the detention in Puerto San Julián of: Honorio Pueyrredón, Carlos Noel, José Tamborini, Alberto Aybar Augier, Miguel Tanco and Manuel Ruiz Moreno, who arrived at that township on 26 January 1933, aboard a vehicle of the national haulage company 'Pampa', after a 12 hour journey from Bahía Blanca.
These characters - particularly Pueyrredón and his wife Julieta Meyans Argerich - went on to develop an active social and political Ufe in the bosom of the community, where in those days the political will was divided between the parties of the 'Unión Vecinal' and the 'Unión Comunal'. Undoubtedly this activity soon bore fruit with the reorganisation of the local 'Unión Cívica Radical' party, which José Antonio Aidar had already drawn up and signed its founding document, on 16 March 1922, in his own hand (according to a photocopy of it in my possession).
As an anecdotal detail, Srs. Llaneza and Granera, of the same political party, set up the chemists' shop 'Del Pueblo'2, a ñame with a clear reference to their party political ideology.
The drawing is from a photo taken at the oíd harbour of Puerto San Julián, on 13 May 1933, on the occasion of the detained politicians' departure returning to Buenos Aires.

From the recollections of Antonio Aidar's grandson, Dr. José Ramón Granero.

El aleman

Walter Knoll (1895-1979).

Walter Knoll (1895-1979). Ihs Fife ihs Ann example of a succession of events at the hands of fortune, tragedy and chance."
Native of Germany (bom in Württemberg), he was the son of a wealthy family who sent him to study engineering in Belgium during the First World War, in which he lost his father (a colonel) and a brother, also in the army.
On his retum to Germany, at the insistence of an únele, he was cheated of his right of inheritance and with that he bade farewell for ever to his family and homeland, embarking on a voyage with an uncertain route.
He reached Valparaíso (Chile) as a crew member onboard a Germán ship, which was impounded by the Chilean authorities. Walter managed to disembark in search of a good time and in his absence his shipmates rose up in rebellion demanding freedom, which the local authorities denied and his shipmates took the tragic decisión of blowing up the ship and going down onboard.
Chance thus helped save Walter's life.
After that he travelled throughout the south of Chile, working in a thousand and one different jobs until he ended up in Punta Arenas.
Then, in Argentina, he was taken on at the Clarks' establishment in 1919, working as a fencer.
Of a refined upbringing, orderly and methodical, he soon won the appreciation of his boss, who designated him as a workers' delégate in the era of the rural strikes (1920-1921).
He was taken hostage by Antonio Soto (leader of the protest) and his followers, for his disagreement with resorting to measures of forceful protest, and was taken to the estancia "Anita", in the vicinity of lake Argentino.
When the estancia was taken over by the militia under the orders of Lt. Col. Várela, he was obliged to dig his own grave and await his fate facing the firing squad, under Cap. Viñas Ibarra. The gloomy narration made by the historian Osvaldo Bayer in his article "Los Vengadores de la Patagonia Trágica"1, gives a clear account of the dramatic episode lived by this unusual and unique man.
At the final moment chance once again played in Walter's favour, because his much-loved boss, Juan Marcos Clark, appeared and saved his life from the Argentine bullets.
Walter Knoll was never to abandon the comer of the world he definitively chose as his own, in spite of the letters he received from his Germán relatives begging him to retum to his country of origin.
He remained for over sixty years with his adoptive family (the Clarks) and even left his inheritances from Germany to his godson, Walter Martín Clark (great-grandson of the man who saved his life).
He died on 2 October 1979. His mortal remains rest at the estancia "El Tero", a portion of the Santa Cruz wilderness that was the land
he loved. Taken from memories of the family and the memoirs of tdoña Elvira Clark de Ru and tdoña Emilia Ru Clark.
1 "Avengers of Tragic Patagonia", publishedin 1968 in the periodical "Todo es Historia". In 1929 José María Borrero had published "La Patagonia Trágica" (c/f p.59 "La Política"), which was repressed during the dictatorship, and Bayer too had to flee the country for the stand he took to set the record of Argentine history straight.

(1894-1967)
Bom in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, he settled in Río Gallegos from 1916. He married Aurora Fernández (bom in Cangas de Tineo, Asturia, Spain) in 1920 and they had five children: Antonio, Elvia, Alicia, Clara and Armanda.
He set up his mechanic's garage and metalwork workshop first in Roca street and then transferred it to España street where it remained for the rest of his life.
At first he devoted himself to the installation of water pipe-work, also attending the rural community, serving estancias like Las Horquetas, María Inés, Los Vascos, etc, repairing wind-powered water pumps and also shearing equipment.
In time he specialised in central heating, installing the systems for the buildings of the local branch of the national bank, the provincial school No.1, the pólice social club, the naval air base, the municipal council offices and others.
I knew him at the 'Club Hispano Americano'. Someone told me, I do not now remember who, that don Antonio, in his youth, once repaired a vital piece of an internal combustión engine using the riveting system, since in those days welding equipment did not exist at these latitudes. Even the mechanics brought here from the Federal Capital on that occasion had been unable to carry out the repair. The engine continued working for a long time. This undoubtedly testifies to his exceptional skill and speaks of the deep devotion to his work that accompanied him all his life.
Don Antonio was a founding member of the 'Atlético Boxing Club' and was a member of the volunteer fire brigade.
It was characters such as this, whose lives were examples of industriousness and rectitude, who were the real pillars on which society was built in these distant lands.

Dr. Benigno Carro Garcia

Benigno Carro Garcia (1886-1976)

Native of Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, Spain), he carne from a family of intellectuals and qualified as a "Licentiate in Medicine" in 1909.
Shortly afterwards he arrived in Argentina, where he revalidated his qualification and then, as a medical doctor, exercised his profession in the province of Buenos Aires.
In 1917 he arrived in Río Gallegos, which in those days was barely a township with just a few inhabitants. The city lacked the medical facilities of modern medicine, but Dr. Carro equipped his Consulting rooms with the apparatus necessary to practise ophthalmology, dentistry, accident surgery, radiology and clinical analysis, being the specialisations for which he was licensed.
For him no patient was too distant and no hour was antisocial. He practised his profession with a great sense of vocation and service.
Gentle and mild-natured, his kindness soon won him the friendliness and affection of local people, who recognised in him a true benefactor of the community of which he was a member.
With a continual desire for self-improvement he constantly kept his professional knowledge updated, getting hold of reading matter in the various languages he mastered.
in 1922 he returned to Spain, where he qualified again as "Doctor in Medicine and Surgery", according to the canons of that country. He also undertook various different courses in Madrid, Barcelona and Paris, to

Benigno Carro Garcia (1886-1976)

Years later he was the license holder for the facilities built by Fiat Italy at La Esperanza, for testing and experimenting with prototypes of the vehicles they brought out year after year in Europe.
When Julio fell incurably ill, Isidro did not want to see his brother in such a bad way, because he found it impossible to come to terms with the gravity of his condition, and he sought refuge at La Esperanza. The day he finally decided to travel to visit him, fate said "No".
In the winter morning mist and fog on the way, a fatal accident cut short Isidro's life. That same day Julio died, victim of his illness.
They set out on the final journey together. The brothers were not able to take leave of each other in life, but they went united into eternity.

Yo conocí a Willy Kaper….!!

(../../..) - +03/02/1962

I knew Willy Kaper (../../.. - 103/02/1962)

For most local people, he was just Willy Kaper, and we lack information about his date of birth, but we suppose it must have been some time in the last few years of the 19th century, and in the vicinity of Hamburg.
According to the memoirs of Margarita GleadelT, Kaper emigrated f rom Germany to the United States accompanied by an aunt at the end of the First World War. A short time later he carne to Argentina, landing at Puerto San Julián, where he devoted himself to wool haulage, at first using those huge wagons pulled by teams of horses, and later lorries.
Margarita recalls how Willy used to wear wide-brimmed hats, in the style of North American cowboys, and his horses' harnesses shone in the sun from a distance, because of the mirrors he had set into them, to announce his arrival.
Subsequently he settled in Río Gallegos and set up a mechanical and welding workshop, situated on Roca and Magallanes streets, which caught fire years later, so he moved then to a new premises at 50 Belgrano street.
Percy Beecher recalls that Kaper set up the first electric welder in this southern área, with which he carried out numerous repairs to the hulls of the ships that landed at the port. Percy also recalls that his father, Watt Beecher, warned Kaper to protect himself from the dangerous task of welding, which in the course of time brought him irremediable consequences.
Those who have spoken to me of Kaper, like those already named, plus Duncan Mann and Juan Roil1, all agree that this simple man was archetypal of a hard worker, sparing of words, responsible at work and cheerful during his leisure time.
I met him just once, in the winter of 1958. I will always remember the image of his great stature, his face blackened by his work at the forge, beret, apron and black boots, which gave him a somewhat sombre appearance.
A short while after, affected by cáncer and suffering atrocious pains, he put a drastic end to his Ufe. Three of his friends figure on the plaque that recalls his memory: Corzal, Verlika and Troniker.
Men like Willy, resourceful, honest and hard-working, were those who left an example to follow. Santa Cruz ought to honour its pioneers. Rescuing them from oblivion is to do them justice.

A popular character
Don Benito Rodríguez Fraga (1893-1969), was a native of Ourol (Lugo province, Spain).
He reached these parts in 1929 to forge a future for himself. He prospected for gold at Cabo Vírgenes, then became a labourer and eventually managed to buy a soda factory.
He was given the affectionate nickname "el licorero" [the liquor man] and the vehicle in which he made his daily delivery round was nicknamed "cachirula"1.
Don Benito, married to doña Manuela Lafuente Ñuño, brought up an exemplary family from the modesty of his daily toil.
His son "Manolo" was a successful photographer trained along with the maestro Roil, and was a member of the first commission to explore the continental ice-fields, and later acted as a guide for the national border guards during the border disputes regarding 'Lago del Desierto'2, in 1965.
His other children are: "Florita" Rodríguez de Lofredo3, Santa Cruz's greatest poet and writer; and Raúl, a geologist and oil engineer in the Pérez Companc4 group, settled in Neuquén.
This is his sound lineage, exemplary models of life that ennoble our identity, the saga of don Benito, a humble and honourable Spaniard.

A woman in the history of Santa Cruz
Doña Matilde Luisa Alonso (1891-1936) was born in Cardeo (Mieres, Spain). She married don Alfredo Fernández González, and together they entered the staff of the estancia 'Camosu-Aike' in 1910.
Subsequently in Río Gallegos they opened the 'Fonda Asturiana' (subsequently Hotel Miramar1), where country folk and rural workers used to stay when in town, whether they had money for their board and lodging or not.
This small young woman, during the rural strikes of 1920-1921, at risk to her own safety, provided asylum and protection for the rural workers persecuted by the pólice and armed forces. They were hidden by doña Matilde, in water holes, or under makeshift beds with false child-births taking place on top.
On one occasion at the door of her boarding house, she planted herself before the corpulent Capt. Diego Ritchie, spitting in his face: "You, sir, do not pass through here!", and without further ado she thus saved her refugees.
She and her husband set up 'La Azucena', near El Cerrito2, and in 1930 the establishment that still bears her ñame, 'La Matilde'.
This valiant woman died in Buenos Aires, without leaving any children, at the early age of 45. She is worthy of our admiration and memory of her, for her integrity and her valour, placed at the service of "what is just and right", for those who struggled and died for demanding a packet of candles per week and a mattress on which to sleep.
From the memoirs of her niece, doña Argentina Ruiz Alonso, widow of Trevisan.

El maestro Fotògrafo

El maestro fotógrafo
Walter Roil (1904-1989).

The master photographer
Walter Roil (1904-1989)
Born in Freiburg (Germany), he arrived in Patagonia for the first time in 1926, landing at Comodoro Rivadavia. Loneliness made him retum to his own country, where he married Hedwig Krug. Back in Argentina, he opened his photography shop in Río Gallegos in 1934.
Don Walter was a highly sensitive spirit, a lover of music and the beauties of nature. He became a photographer par excellence and sweetened the dusty Ufe of the people of Río Gallegos for over five decades with his outstandingly beautiful photography. His work has initiated the most important photographic archive of Santa Cruz and perhaps the whole of Patagonia.
His artistic vein has continued in his children and grandchildren, who have followed in his footsteps. Don Walter's simple and exemplary Ufe is a landmark that neither his descendants ñor those who had the privilege of enjoying his friendship will ever forget.
